INITIAL MASTERPLAN IDEA

Inspired by the Superkilen in Copenhagen, we created a masterplan for Stretford. The main concept of the design is to shift car traffic into the tunnels below the main intersection and to create an open pedestrianised area between the two sites,  making a safe green zone for the people to enjoy. The centre of the area acts like a nucleus of a cell, becoming a central multipurpose space for Stretford to hold events.

REVISED MASTERPLAN

Leisure area
Quiet  green alley
Playground

The aim of the proposed masterplan is to create a car-free pedestrian and cyclist area in the centre of Stretford by diverting car traffic into underground tunnels.

For pedestrians to feel safe and for cyclists to travel faster, a raised cycling roundabout was designed. It connects the four  zones of the area.

It is important for our practice to consider the rich variety of user groups in the area, which is why it was decided to contingently assign a specific function to each zone of the masterplan: leisure for older people activities,  playground for children,  green area for pet owners, and a quiet alley for strolls and conversations.
